Weekly port & rail briefing

Seattle–Tacoma port and rail briefing: gate readiness, receiving and staging

This week’s planning focus connects terminal access, export receiving and the place a truck or container waits before its next appointment. Use the current pickup facility and shipment instructions to turn these updates into a trucking plan.

Gate readiness: check the truck and company records

NWSA’s October 6 reminder reports gate turnaways connected with RFID registration. It asks truckers to keep eModal RFID information current and confirm that the trucking companies associated with the work are active. Older tags may also need replacement.

This affects importers and transportation teams assigning terminal pickups as well as the drivers making them. Before the move, connect the released container and appointment with a truck whose terminal-access information has been checked.

Your next step

Confirm gate-readiness details with dispatch before assigning the pickup.

Plan a port container pickup

Export receiving: distinguish the estimate from the instruction

NWSA’s receiving page compiles terminal information on weekday mornings and directs customers to the terminal or ocean carrier for the most current instruction. Estimated receiving dates and the actual authorization to receive a booking are different planning inputs.

Exporters, forwarders and loading facilities should align cargo readiness, the loading appointment, the receiving window and cutoff before sending a loaded container to the terminal. A receiving appointment alone does not establish that the booking can be delivered early.

Your next step

Share the booking, loading-ready time and current receiving instruction when requesting export trucking.

Tacoma waiting: plan the space between appointments

NWSA’s October 28 notice addresses trucks parking on the northbound I-5 ramp shoulder at Port of Tacoma Road. It identifies roadway and safety problems and warns of enforcement.

An early release or moved receiving appointment needs a workable waiting or staging arrangement. Discuss Tacoma container staging, chassis requirements and onward-delivery timing when those dates differ; the right arrangement depends on the shipment.

Your next step

Give dispatch both the pickup deadline and the first workable receiving window.

Rail pickup: name the facility before planning the local leg

For rail movements, use the facility on the current release. BNSF SIG and South Seattle/Tukwila are separate pickup points; Union Pacific Tacoma has its own facility information and operating instructions.

Cargo owners and logistics providers should send the unit, release, equipment arrangement, receiver appointment and return instructions together. Include any 53FT Power Only Support requirement so dispatch reviews the correct movement.

Your next step

Confirm the ramp, unit and receiving plan with the request.
